Of course, not every company or manager likes that strategy. You could deal with this like an adult, or you could use some silly tricks compiled by a random blogger. Note : this article is full of advice you shouldn’t use. What you absolutely should do, however, is join Zoom meetings by phone , ideally while taking a walk.

It’s a great change of pace. Every video conferencing app offers custom backgrounds: you can add any photo or video you want. Some people use this to hide potential distractions, like a messy office. Others use it to pretend they’re attending a meeting from Dunder Mifflin or the bridge of the Enterprise.

But that’s not all this feature can do—you can also use it to make it look like you’re paying attention. Just record a video of yourself looking at the camera, ideally while occasionally nodding. If you are choosing to look into the camera, it can help to imagine that on the other side of the camera is a person who is really interested in what you have to say, and that you are speaking to that person.

If you know the people in the meeting, you can imagine them one by one in turn listening and being interested as you speak. This will not only improve your confidence, it will make you speak in a more personal and conversational style. In many ways, I could have made this my number 1 tip, because it is such a powerful aid in all meetings but especially on Zoom.

If you can find the aspects of what you are saying that you really care about and feel emotionally connected to, and speak with that deeper meaning in mind and in your heart , that will really translate to the audience who is listening.

They will really feel it and really feel you. And, as a bonus, by concentrating on why your message matters and what you really want your audience to receive from your presentation, you will automatically feel less worried about yourself, and therefore more confident. The best way to get out of your head is by getting into a felt sense of your body. The simplest way of doing this is to feel your bottom and thighs on the seat, your feet on the floor, your back against the back of the chair.

If you can feel other sensations in your body, even better. Have a sense of really leaning back in your chair and letting your audience come to you. If you combine this with speaking from the heart tip 6 , it is particularly powerful. In addition to feeling your body on the chair, you can deliberately relax along your midline to feel more spacious and in control. You can use it in a minute or so before you are due to speak to give you an extra boost of relaxation and confidence.

A wonderful way to take the edge of your adrenaline in a Zoom meeting is to take a breath where the out-breath is at least twice as long as the in-breath.

Choose your best angle, move furniture, whatever you feel is necessary to position you comfortably and to make sure that you can be seen in a professional manner. Stay away from heavy patterned shirts and clunky jewelry.

Patterns are distracting to the viewer and clunky jewelry makes noise. Do not have backlight, this means that you should set-up looking out the window and make sure that it is not behind you. Doing so will make you look like a silhouette and viewers cannot see your nonverbal expressions. Turn the lights on in the room to light dark corners as well.

Avoid overhead lighting. This casts unflattering shadows on your face. Make sure the room is tidy and move items out of camera view that are distracting. Choose a room that will have the least amount of interruptions, preferably one with a door that you can close.

You can use your built-in microphone, an external microphone, or a headset. Best audio quality is achieved by limiting the distractions, so make sure your phone and emails are set to silent or off. Minimize distracting noises around you, microphones are very sensitive and can pick up the sounds of typing, papers shuffling, or jewelry clanking on a desk.

Sound is important. If you are too far away your voice will be too soft. If you are to close it might be muffled. Be aware of common noise in the area you will be using for your meeting. Is the washing machine or dryer making a noise?

Is the heater that you never hear anymore so loud that you will have to yell? Take note of your surroundings and always speak clearly so that others can hear you. Be aware of your appearance.
